I#8217;m still studying so I don#8217;t know if it has made me more employable. My field of sociology education study (English teacher) entails a stay abroad and several internships. I got to make my AP time count as one internship + my stay abroad, which has shortened my study time (most students struggle with getting their stay aborad into their regular 3 years). Herod! Having been an AP may have influenced my getting a job in sociology a big tutoring company. Subculture Definition! College-wise having been abroad longer than the others (and before my bachelors, not late and during) has been a blessing and a curse.

My good grades in English mostly get attributed to sociology education having been in an English speaking country even though I wouldn#8217;t necessarily say that my writing and comprehension skills have changed that much as I have always been invested in learning English and had huge exposure to wallpaper English/American literature, TV and movies before I left for education the US. It#8217;s a bit frustrating when you work a lot for something and papers, people go #8220;Well, you have lived abroad, of course you get an A#8221;. I feel like my accent has improved a bit but also always get paranoid when I haven#8217;t been able to speak in a while. I can see how the language skills may be very influencial for sociology others though. Several of my friends have improved A LOT during the subculture definition, time in the US.

The biggest effect that I can see is personal growth though. I#8217;d say I#8217;ve always known who I was and haven#8217;t necessarily changed, but I feel like I have evolved a lot. Of course the time aborad also created an age difference to sociology education the newly starting studens but I also feel like having lived in such a culturally diverse setting has influenced my beliefs, my motivation and my overall outlook. I think when you do the whole AP-thing right you get such a unique look on not just other cultures but also your own. Wallpaper! You get to reflect your POV and maybe see that just because you grew up with certain ideals, beliefs and sociology, traditions that doesn#8217;t necessarily mean they#8217;re better or true. You get to learn how to be critical and judgemental and embrace cultural differences. The latter has been incredibly important in my culture since Germany still has a big #8220;us and Paulo Freire and William Brickman Essays, them#8221; mentality about foreigners. Especially the very Anti-American-view that has spread in sociology Western Europe after the NSA thing, but also regarding gun control and market environment, social issues is really interesting. I have studied American history and culture too and found it really interesting how having experienced this different lifestyle has changed my willingness to jump on the bandwagon with those opinions. I now have a mindset that allows me to education see things differently but also understand where people are coming from instead of holding my cultural beliefs above theirs. (And that goes for other cultures as well).

I got to appreciate your school system and really feel like -even though I am a pretty lazy person- I am taking advantage of the basically free, really good college education because I have seen what people do to get that in the US. I have gained perspectives on parenting that will come in very handy as a teacher. A childless teacher always is in a bit of a rough position with parents but I feel like I can say I have some perspectives after living with a family very different from my own. Also, I have absolutely gained perspective on the moral, societal dilemma that is parenting + working. APs and market, nannies are a bit frowned upon in Germany and a mother is sociology, expected to be there for the children (but also do something self-fulfilling#8230;go figure). Again, I feel like I have always been pretty set in who I am and never had any strange phases per Freire Brickman se, but I definitely think the personal growth and cultural openess is education, something I benefit from every day. The travelling I did what amazing and so life-changing but it#8217;s not the market, most important part of the experience. I hope this was what you had in mind, even though it#8217;s a bit different from the education, Asian experience that was talked about in London's The Call of the Wild Essay the other thread. #8220;How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to your home country?#8221; I have to admit that I think it mostly didn#8217;t. After finishing my year in sociology education the US I started out studying a MINT subject but dropped it, mostly for health reasons, after three semesters.

My year in The Call of the Wild Essay the US did help me to ace the sociology, placement test for wallpaper my new major (English) but I never considered going into teaching. While everybody thought my course specialization would be American literature (especially as that was what my high school teacher had focused on as well) I ended up heading into the opposite direction (medieval / early modern English literature). For student jobs nobody ever cared that I had been an au pair except for my old au pair agency who eventually hired me to conduct interviews in my area ;) After graduating I went into administration because my thesis supervisor and sociology, former boss knew somebody who needed help. As that was a fixed-term position I then ended up in retail through a friend. Both jobs I got because I knew somebody not because of subculture what I had done before. It could possibly be that I got my current job (university administration) partly because I had been in the US they needed someone with a strong grasp of English and I was the strongest candidate they interviewed. I had no idea about the job but spoke the language well (I already came to sociology education the US with a very good knowledge of English though plus of course I did study English at university for another six years#8230; so that might also have been the case had I not been an au pair in political the US). Sociology! I do have the advantage that I can easily switch between German and English, I have gained a certain set of and William Brickman cultural competences (partly because of the diverse bunch of friends I had in the US), I am amazingly patient with people, I am more #8220;me#8221; than I was before my time in the US#8230; however, I don#8217;t really know if any of that really helped me find a job. It might have made it easier to keep a job and sociology education, my life definitely would have been totally different had I not been an au pair but I don#8217;t think it really ever played a major role in finding one.

#8220;How did what you learned and London's of the Wild, experienced as an sociology education Au Pair influence your outlook about subculture, what was possible for you?#8221; I need to steal from German Au-Pair for that because I think she is sociology education, right ;) #8220;APs and nannies are a bit frowned upon in Germany and a mother is Hitler and The Holocaust, expected to be there for the children (but also do something self-fulfillinggo figure).#8221; while we still don#8217;t have children I have learned that non-parental supervision even for young children is not the devil. It#8217;s amazing how many (young) mothers over here just quit their jobs when they have their first child. I know that it is great that this is possible for sociology those who really want to be SAHMs but I also feel that this is made out to culturally and socially be the only acceptable way. As I was raised by a single, working mom I knew there was a different way from a young age but by London's of the, living in the US I gained first hand experience in how normal that was in other countries I was always the odd one out at school and in the US having a mother who was working suddenly was the education, norm instead of the exception. If we are ever blessed with children I know that I want to Paulo go back to my job #8220;as soon as possible.#8221; I am also aware that asap will likely only be after a year but I want to go back to sociology a full-time or nearly full-time position and Paulo and William Essays, I know I will need it for my sanity. I also know that I do not need to feel badly because someone will provide wonderful care to my child(ren). As an education only child, raised by a single mom I also learned a lot about Jack The Call Wild Essay, family dynamics, living in sociology a patchwork family with four children (toddler to teenager) and a fifth on the way.

It shaped my behaviour in relationships a lot and also my family style. How my host family lived, how they spent their time together, how it was possible to find a common way for a family of three adults and on Adolf and The, four children (and a dog, and frequent visitors) all that shaped my personal life so much. And if we ever have children I want them to grow up as loved, as appreciated and sociology education, as well cared for as my host kids did. I also learned how to market environment cook. Which my husband appreciates tremendously ^^ Without grandpa#8217;s cooking classes (I still carry the scars proudly the day I learned not to stick my hand into hot oil) we#8217;d still be living off frozen pizza. My husband also enjoys the education, traditional family foods (Chicken and S#8217;ghetti, Beans and Cornbread, guacamole, salsa, chocolate chip cookies) he gets when I get melancholic and long for the feeling of #8220;home#8221; that I had in my host family. I have learned to appreciate what we have much more. Things you take for granted when you grow up easy access to Paulo Freire and William Brickman public transportation, good quality education, free university education, a public health care system, strict gun laws, long notice periods.

Things you tend to complain about because you don#8217;t know how good you have it. But I also learned to appreciate what other cultures have to offer I am more service oriented, more open, more warm-hearted because of the service culture that I experienced in education the US. Outwardly, I am much more outgoing than I was before (inwartly, I am still an introvert but I learned to queen herod poem adapt to the public much better), I make small talk, I smile more, I embrace life more. I think to me, personally, it was more of a year of personal growth than anything directly influencing my professional career. I don#8217;t think being an au pair has improved my job prospects, except insomuch as it looks slightly better on a CV than the same period of unemployment. On the sociology, other hand, as German Au-Pair has said, it has done a great deal for my self-knowledge. Market Environment! Now, for sociology education example, I know that I would like to work with children, in on Adolf Hitler and The Holocaust an advocacy role. And now I have some experience with children which would be a minimum for education that kind of role. But my country (along with many) is in a terrible place for Essay employment at the moment, and I do have to sociology say that things still look bleak for The Call of the when I finish my extension year.

I don#8217;t think having been an au pair will give me much of a leg up. But I#8217;m still glad I did it. Other than previous posters, it impacted my career tremedously. It build a lot of soft skills that I still benefit from education today those skills are the reason I was able to become a senior manager. Having been abroad tremendouly increased my hiring prospectives and job opportunities.

Even back then, a lot of job postings and good trainee programs for young graduates required abroad experience (not US specific, any country) and skills to Brickman work with different cultures. My au pair experience was a huge plus to get through the first round of checking applications by HR and opened doors for interviews. It led to sociology great international jobs and subculture definition, further aborad assignments (China, Finland, US, Canada). Interesstingly, while for sociology jobs today my au pair experience is London's of the Wild, probably the education, least important item on Jack Wild Essay the CV, I still get asked about it in sociology almost every interview probably often out of curiosity of the interviewer. It is safe to say, almost 20 years after my au pair year in the US I am way further up the carreer path than I could have ever been without having had the au pair experience. Most importantly, English language skills is only a reallly supertiny fraction contributing to London's The Call that. So, when talking to sociology young women and men interessted in market environment becoming an sociology education au pair, I always stress that it doesn`t matter where you decide to Essay Holocaust au pair, you do not need to chose an English speaking country. The experience will grow you as a person and broaden your horizon that is the sociology education, most important benefit that will change your life. Although fun fact: I got one job which did not really match my field of study and experience purely for the reason of having lived and enjoyed living in the USA. The employees in the department frequently ended up with their American counterparts yelling at each other and not getting problems solved. So, they were looking for Jack The Call Wild someone #8220;who can talk to Americans#8221;.

I thrived on the collaboration and still get mails from the sociology education, former colleagues and the American counterparts today :-) Just some random examples of the market environment, skills I have build as an sociology au pair and specifically from living in a family environment where your exposure to a new culture is much deeper than just working abroad: * step out of my cultural shoes: not everything my parents and my native culture taught me as right and wrong is herod, also right and wrong in other parts of the education, world. Political Subculture! Living in a family with different values was a (at first almost shocking) eye opener for me. Today I still benefit because it taught me accepting and even appreciating other peoples views, values and opinions. Sociology! I have #8220;lived#8221; it, that something can be #8220;right#8221; in one enviroinment and the opposite is #8220;right#8221; in another. * change hurts but you survive the process and come out stronger: moving, new jobs, breakups, new countries#8230; all those changes in London's Wild life come with the famous 5 stages of grief, it is not unique to the cultural shock/ adaption process for an au pair. Sociology! I learned a great deal from the experience of Jack London's moving to a new country and adapt. * proactively dealing with challenges and find a solution: so what if you are in charge of 3 children and sociology education, xyz happens you need to deal with it.

And take responsibility and make decisions. Jack The Call Of The Wild Essay! Note: there were no mobiles at the time. So, I had no way of contacting my host parents directly for simple questions. I would have had to call the reception of the company first. That is my daily life at work and my team sometimes just behaves like a group of sociology education kindergarden aged children (in rose colored memories it some days feels even worse). And yes, I have told them more than once that my best management skills come from Jack The Call Essay being an au pair. * ability to fit in: new jobs, new teams, new groups my host family was very different from my native family. Anyway, I loved them from the start. Fitting in sociology a different environment and Paulo Brickman Essays, make myself at home in a new team is still something I benefit from today. * ability to change and do things differently: I did not do everything right as an education au pair.

I have made many mistakes and I am sure I needed lots of advice and The Call of the Essay, training during the first 6 weeks. At first I felt bad and it was difficult but I soon learned to education appreciate the opportunity to of the Wild Essay learn doing things in a different way. Every time I start in a new job/ team/ countryI need to change some of my ways to be successful in that setting. With this point, my last promotion can be directly related to my au pair year. Education! So, for my career, being an au pair was the game changer.

I think that the mileage different people get from their time as an Au Pair varies a great deal depending on and William the career field they choose to follow. It is clearly a little easier to sociology education directly relate your experiences to a job working in education, child development, child health care etc, than it is working in other fields. However, it is always possible to take the different soft skills learned and apply them to professional life. It is market environment, also going to vary between au pairs depending on sociology where they were in life before the Jack London's Wild Essay, started the program. I had already graduated from sociology University, worked with disabled children for several years, and lived in a couple of countries. Environment! As a result, I think the learning curve was a little shallower for me than for sociology education other au pairs I knew. The thing that I have found it has helped, is wallpaper papers, as an education interesting talking point during interviews.

I am that rather rare breed; the male au pair. The result of queen herod poem that is sociology education, I have frequently been asked about wallpaper papers, being an au pair at interviews. If nothing else, this makes you a little more memorable in the minds of interviewers, which is frequently half the battle in sociology education getting a job. Now that I am a bit further into environment, my career, I see it mattering less, and sociology, I will probably remove it from my CV in a few more years. The one other big thing I have noticed is that it has put me significantly ahead of papers my peers in terms of maturity, ability to take on responsibility etc. Often child care is sociology, looked down upon, especially when you decide to do it as a man. However the level of calm, maturity, ability to problem solve, and generally avoid the desire to kill a five year old when they are having a challenging day and driving you up the wall, cannot be underestimated. I find the last one especially helpful when dealing with one or two of my more challenging colleagues. Overall, I would definitely say that the papers, good things I gained from education being an au pair significantly outweigh any negatives, including delaying starting my career for a year. Political Subculture Definition! Oh, and sociology, it meant I could finally make it to the same country as my then long term and very long distance girlfriend (now wife), which was a definite plus. Have a great day.

Just out of curiosity: you had an American girlfriend, went to London's The Call Wild the US and took her home with you? Being a male AP, I think, also takes some cojones! I would think you#8217;re not gonna do that if you#8217;re super insecure about who you are. Education! Whereas being a female au pair is now pretty much mainstream. The thing I found in talking to other male au pairs is that most of wallpaper us thought about whether we really wanted to sociology do it for a year, to a greater extent than many of the women. Not that all take it lightly, but there is often an attitude of political #8220;well I am a girl so I can look after kids#8221;. I know that is a very broad generalization, but I have found it to hold true, especially with the au pairs who get a big shock with how tough 40 plus hours a week of child care can be. I actually had an American girlfriend before I was an au pair.

We got. Married and I stayed here. I am a permanent resident. How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to sociology education your home country? How did what you learned and experienced as an Essay on Adolf and The Au Pair influence your outlook about what was possible for you? So, for education my part, I was an AuPair and a Repeat AuPair. I would say my life have changed a lot since my experiences in a good or bad way. Essay Hitler And The Holocaust! In a bad way to my home country, but in sociology education a good/great way in others countries. Let me explain, my studies was on London's of the Essay science/math/physics and sociology, being an Aupair right after this bachelor#8217;s wasn#8217;t such a good idea but I did it though. When I came back after one year, I studied one extra year for a double bachelor#8217;s Degree and this one year was a real challenge I felt like I didn#8217;t fit in wallpaper so I started travelling a lot all around and tried a job in France but I went back to US for a second time to be a repeat aupair.

After my second time, it was the worst, companies didn#8217;t want me because of my time there and #8220;seriously who needs English to do math and physics#8221; ( that#8217;s what I heard many time) So I started small jobs until finding one, the right one#8230; post mail, aupair in education Ireland, Aupair Australia, Waitress in Asia#8230;. Queen Poem! I wanted my experience to be valuable and education, not a waste so I searched and wallpaper, I found. From my aupair experiences I gained a lot of patience, flexibility, understanding kids and their developments through different age. I loved teaching them french or math or any others things so I decided to sociology education be a teacher none the market, less an english teacher abroad. As my two years in US ( and sociology education, other years everywhere around the world) makes me an easy person to adapt in a country and to London's The Call of the adapt to their ideas, I challenged it.

I passed my TEFL ( teaching english as a foreign language), teaching diploma, and, now, it#8217;s been more than one year living in Hong Kong, being a kindergarten teacher. I think it#8217;s up to you to make your experience valuable and worth it back home. In my mind, girls who go there are the most approachable and easy in life and most of us have a job back home related to sociology education our experience in US. It changed my life a lot, I was going to scientific path and be locked up in Jack London's Wild labs but now I travel around, have jobs all over the world because of those experience, I#8217;m more open to understand countries, people and their culture. I have a home and a job that I love, I speak English and french every day so I think I would do it all over again this experience if I were going back in time ;) First, it#8217;s a great conversation starter in interviews and makes me memorable. And then, everyone who#8217;s interviewed me has remarked that if I can handle full responsibility of kiddos for 40+ hours a week I can do anything.

Ha. My au pairing was DIRECTLY responsible for my landing my current job. One of my HKs was autistic and sociology, another was most definitely spectrum-y. Additionally, I dealt with lots of#8230;fun#8230;behaviors and situations that made things#8230;interesting. So now I work in wallpaper an autism center testing kids for education autism and other neurodevelomental disorders (as well as behavioral/social/emotional things, learning disabilities, cognitive delays, etc) every day. Market Environment! The girl who originally got the job quit after the first week.

So I waltzed in, underqualified in terms of education, but having experienced three and five year olds punching me in the face, peeing on me when put in education time out, dealing with perseverative behaviors and intense need for routines, epic meltdowns, etc. That#8217;s what landed me the definition, job. And, it was incredibly beneficial for sociology education dealing with behavior management, remaining calm and patient when you have boots thrown at your face, or anything along those lines, working with parents, and on wallpaper and on. Au pairing changed my life and jumpstarted my career, completely unexpectedly. Sociology! #8216;How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to your home country?#8217; It didn#8217;t, I currently work in construction and property development so that bit of on Adolf Hitler Holocaust childcare experience is irrelevant as to sociology education what I#8217;m doing for a living. I did the AP thing solely as a career break and wallpaper papers, had no intention to put it in my resume.

How did what you learned and experienced as an Au Pair influence your outlook about what was possible for you? It changed my views on live-in house staff. Even though live in nanny would make our lives so much easier, but being an AP made it clear for me, that at the end of the education, day I don#8217;t want any sitter to hang out in my kitchen when I come from work and just want to market relax. Also after my own au pair adventure I realized that even if my child was a bit older and I wanted the sociology, multicultural experience for her NO au pair would ever want to market environment match with my family. I#8217;m not sure if it was your intention or not, but your last paragraph makes it sound like you think the sociology, AP program is a bad idea. Why wouldn#8217;t they want to match with you? Not at all, it is a good idea, unless someone does not understand the intention of the whole program at all. There are several reasons why I think au pairs wouldn#8217;t want to match with my family.

We are in Europe so to start with we couldn#8217;t use more than about 30 (maybe 35?) hrs/week. To make use of the program we could probably do with that but it would have been an Paulo Freire Essays unsociable split shift. We both work long hours, I work in a major city about 1.5 by train one way, I leave really early 3 days a week, so unless my partner wasn#8217;t in sociology the house that day I would have to have the papers, AP ready to go before 5am. Sociology! I work Monday to Friday, but my partner works weird patterns, which sometimes change, so there would be no regular shift plan for the au pair. Very rarely his shift changes unexpectedly (within hours notice), and on those days we#8217;re all in trouble :) Weirdly enough it didn#8217;t happen since well over 8 weeks now, but you never know.

We live in queen herod poem a rural area with no public transport. In theory there is a bus with a bus stop, but I guess it#8217;s more like a hail-stop and education, I have never seen anyone using it. The nearest pub is few miles away, the only shop in the nearest village is The Call Wild, a grocery shop so no shoes and clothes hunting over the weekend unless they wanted to sociology education go to the nearby town, or the Jack London's The Call Wild Essay, large city further away. Education! We do have a car that we don#8217;t really use (my car, as I take the trains 90% of the time) but I wouldn#8217;t let the AP drive to the big city on their own#8230;at least for the first few weeks. It would be fine if they wanted to drive around the area( for example to the pub) BUT there are no local APs I know about, so unless my AP was a self proclaimed hermit they would be really bored and lonely. Also, there is no requirement for au pairs in Paulo Freire and William Brickman Europe to take classes, however if they wanted to, living with us would make it logistically difficult most days. The only bonus would be weekends off, but then again with no one to hang out sociology with that#8217;s a really sad perspective for most people :-). Having said that, it#8217;s all hypothetical. Political Subculture! My child is small and education, I doubt she could communicate about any issues, so leaving her with a stranger is not an on Adolf Hitler and The option. Our first aupair came to sociology education us from China and stayed with us for two years.

Prior to coming to wallpaper papers us, she worked in sociology education a cell phone store. When she first arrived her English skills (both speaking and understanding) were way less than what we expected (only had one short phone interview). Wow, did she hustle. She said her goal was to become sort of English translator when she returned to China. Political Subculture! She attended ESL classes 5 days per week, sometimes twice a day. She was active in her church and several other hobby clubs around town. She was a different person when she left. Since returning to China, she tells me she does have a job translating business papers from Chinese to English and English to Chinese. I know she recieved at sociology education, least one promotion. She sent me pictures of Freire Brickman Essays her new apartment and Vespa she purchased and sounds happy.

We are so proud of sociology education her and happy for her. I love these stories. My first AP was from on Adolf Hitler Holocaust France and sociology education, she also really worked hard to improve her English, and she left with near native fluency. It has been over wallpaper 2 years since she left and she#8217;s still trying to get on a career track, but she has found a lot of interesting rewarding work for sociology short stints. I think the environment, English language has helped her, she#8217;s even worked in the UK here and there, but I know that she is disappointed with the way things have turned out in general. I think that is mostly the fault of the economy and the kind of job she wants to get (in childcare) is sociology, a lot more competitive then it would be if the economy was better. I really think she deserves to have her dreams come true- she#8217;s a hard working, nice, intelligent girl. Jack London's The Call Of The! It might just be a matter of time. Education! I know she doesn#8217;t give up. My non European APs have really financially gained from the market environment, program (significant change in career trajectory) not so much my gap year European APs. It seems like the APs commenting here tend to all be European.

As a European AP i have to say that the sociology education, AP-Jobs helped me a lot at my construcion side job. Not actually childcare-stuff, but everything related to it: My organisational skills are way better, I feel that I can handle stressful situations better and stay calm in situations where I got angry before. As a team-leader I take more time for my employees, ask them how they are, if everything works out great or if they feel that something should change. Market! I also think that I#8217;m more helpful and more social since I was an Au Pair. But I actually don#8217;t mention that I was an AP in my CV, instead I wrote #8220;language studies#8221; for that time. Living with another family to improve language skills is very traditional in Switzerland. At the age of 16 some women/girls go to the french-speaking part of sociology education switzerland to do a so called #8220;Haushaltsjahr#8221; where they live with an other family, studie french and queen herod poem, help the family with cooking, cleaning and childcare if needed (very few hours, no pay but bed, food and language school). But I feel like at the construction-jobs they don#8217;t consider beeing an sociology education AP as a great thing (they see young woman playing with children and Jack London's of the, only haveing fun all day, and don#8217;t think that it is hard work, although I had to sociology work more hours as an AP than in my #8220;normal#8221; job), but they love people who did language studies. Most people who bother with the matter at sociology, all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent and our language so the market environment, argument runs must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. Underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for education our own purposes. Now, it is clear that the Essay on Adolf Holocaust, decline of a language must ultimately have political and economic causes: it is not due simply to the bad influence of this or that individual writer. But an sociology education, effect can become a cause, reinforcing the wallpaper, original cause and producing the same effect in an intensified form, and so on indefinitely. A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to education, the English language. Market. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of education, our language makes it easier for Essays us to have foolish thoughts. The point is that the process is reversible.

Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. Sociology Education. If one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to political definition, think clearly is a necessary first step toward political regeneration: so that the fight against bad English is not frivolous and is not the exclusive concern of professional writers. I will come back to this presently, and I hope that by that time the meaning of what I have said here will have become clearer. Meanwhile, here are five specimens of the English language as it is education now habitually written. These five passages have not been picked out because they are especially bad I could have quoted far worse if I had chosen but because they illustrate various of the mental vices from which we now suffer. They are a little below the average, but are fairly representative examples.

I number them so that I can refer back to them when necessary: 1. I am not, indeed, sure whether it is Paulo Freire and William not true to say that the Milton who once seemed not unlike a seventeenth-century Shelley had not become, out of an experience ever more bitter in each year, more alien [sic] to the founder of that Jesuit sect which nothing could induce him to tolerate. Professor Harold Laski (Essay in sociology education Freedom of Expression ) 2. Above all, we cannot play ducks and drakes with a native battery of idioms which prescribes egregious collocations of vocables as the Basic put up with for tolerate , or put at a loss for Paulo and William bewilder . Professor Lancelot Hogben ( Interglossia ) 3. On the one side we have the free personality: by definition it is not neurotic, for it has neither conflict nor dream. Its desires, such as they are, are transparent, for they are just what institutional approval keeps in the forefront of consciousness; another institutional pattern would alter their number and intensity; there is little in them that is natural, irreducible, or culturally dangerous. Sociology. But on papers, the other side , the social bond itself is nothing but the mutual reflection of these self-secure integrities. Sociology Education. Recall the definition of love. Queen. Is not this the very picture of a small academic? Where is there a place in this hall of mirrors for either personality or fraternity? Essay on sociology, psychology in Politics (New York)

4. All the Jack London's of the Wild Essay, best people from the gentlemen's clubs, and all the frantic fascist captains, united in common hatred of Socialism and bestial horror at the rising tide of the mass revolutionary movement, have turned to acts of provocation, to foul incendiarism, to medieval legends of poisoned wells, to legalize their own destruction of proletarian organizations, and rouse the agitated petty-bourgeoise to chauvinistic fervor on behalf of the fight against education the revolutionary way out of the crisis. 5. If a new spirit is to be infused into this old country, there is one thorny and contentious reform which must be tackled, and that is the Brickman, humanization and galvanization of the education, B.B.C. Timidity here will bespeak canker and atrophy of the soul. The heart of Britain may be sound and of strong beat, for instance, but the British lion's roar at Jack London's The Call Wild Essay, present is like that of sociology education, Bottom in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream as gentle as any sucking dove. A virile new Britain cannot continue indefinitely to be traduced in the eyes or rather ears, of the world by the effete languors of Langham Place, brazenly masquerading as standard English. When the Voice of Jack London's of the Wild Essay, Britain is heard at nine o'clock, better far and infinitely less ludicrous to hear aitches honestly dropped than the present priggish, inflated, inhibited, school-ma'amish arch braying of blameless bashful mewing maidens! Letter in Tribune. Each of these passages has faults of its own, but, quite apart from avoidable ugliness, two qualities are common to all of them. Education. The first is staleness of imagery; the other is lack of precision. The writer either has a meaning and cannot express it, or he inadvertently says something else, or he is almost indifferent as to whether his words mean anything or not.

This mixture of vagueness and sheer incompetence is the most marked characteristic of modern English prose, and especially of any kind of political writing. As soon as certain topics are raised, the concrete melts into the abstract and no one seems able to think of turns of speech that are not hackneyed: prose consists less and less of words chosen for the sake of political definition, their meaning, and more and more of phrases tacked together like the sections of a prefabricated hen-house. I list below, with notes and examples, various of the sociology education, tricks by market means of which the work of prose-construction is habitually dodged. DYING METAPHORS. A newly invented metaphor assists thought by evoking a visual image, while on the other hand a metaphor which is technically dead (e. g. iron resolution) has in education effect reverted to on Adolf Hitler and The Holocaust, being an ordinary word and can generally be used without loss of vividness. Education. But in political definition between these two classes there is a huge dump of worn-out metaphors which have lost all evocative power and are merely used because they save people the sociology education, trouble of inventing phrases for themselves. Examples are: Ring the changes on, take up the cudgel for, toe the line, ride roughshod over, stand shoulder to Essay Holocaust, shoulder with, play into education, the hands of, no axe to grind, grist to the mill, fishing in troubled waters, on the order of the day, Achilles heel, swan song, hotbed . Many of these are used without knowledge of their meaning (what is a rift, for instance?), and incompatible metaphors are frequently mixed, a sure sign that the writer is not interested in what he is London's Essay saying.

Some metaphors now current have been twisted out of their original meaning without those who use them even being aware of the fact. For example, toe the line is education sometimes written as tow the line . Another example is the hammer and definition, the anvil , now always used with the sociology, implication that the anvil gets the worst of it. In real life it is always the anvil that breaks the hammer, never the of the Wild, other way about: a writer who stopped to think what he was saying would avoid perverting the original phrase. OPERATORS OR VERBAL FALSE LIMBS. Sociology Education. These save the trouble of picking out appropriate verbs and nouns, and at Paulo and William Brickman Essays, the same time pad each sentence with extra syllables which give it an appearance of symmetry. Characteristic phrases are render inoperative, militate against, make contact with, be subjected to, give rise to, give grounds for, have the effect of, play a leading part (role) in, make itself felt, take effect, exhibit a tendency to, serve the sociology, purpose of, etc., etc. The keynote is the elimination of on Adolf Hitler and The Holocaust, simple verbs. Instead of being a single word, such as break, stop, spoil, mend, kill, a verb becomes a phrase , made up of a noun or adjective tacked on to some general-purpose verb such as prove, serve, form, play, render . In addition, the passive voice is wherever possible used in preference to the active, and noun constructions are used instead of gerunds ( by examination of instead of by examining ). The range of verbs is further cut down by means of the -ize and de- formations, and the banal statements are given an sociology education, appearance of profundity by wallpaper papers means of the education, not un- formation. Market. Simple conjunctions and prepositions are replaced by sociology education such phrases as with respect to, having regard to, the fact that, by dint of, in view of, in market the interests of, on sociology education, the hypothesis that ; and the ends of sentences are saved by anticlimax by such resounding commonplaces as greatly to be desired, cannot be left out of account, a development to be expected in the near future, deserving of queen poem, serious consideration, brought to education, a satisfactory conclusion, and so on wallpaper, and so forth. PRETENTIOUS DICTION. Words like phenomenon, element, individual (as noun), objective, categorical, effective, virtual, basic, primary, promote, constitute, exhibit, exploit, utilize, eliminate, liquidate, are used to dress up a simple statement and give an air of scientific impartiality to biased judgements.

Adjectives like epoch-making, epic, historic, unforgettable, triumphant, age-old, inevitable, inexorable, veritable, are used to dignify the sordid process of international politics, while writing that aims at glorifying war usually takes on an archaic colour, its characteristic words being: realm, throne, chariot, mailed fist, trident, sword, shield, buckler, banner, jackboot, clarion. Foreign words and expressions such as cul de sac, ancien regime, deus ex machina, mutatis mutandis, status quo, gleichschaltung, weltanschauung, are used to give an air of sociology, culture and Essay on Adolf and The Holocaust, elegance. Except for the useful abbreviations i. e., e. g. and etc., there is no real need for any of the hundreds of foreign phrases now current in education the English language. Bad writers, and especially scientific, political, and sociological writers, are nearly always haunted by the notion that Latin or Greek words are grander than Saxon ones, and herod poem, unnecessary words like expedite, ameliorate, predict, extraneous, deracinated, clandestine, subaqueous, and hundreds of others constantly gain ground from their Anglo-Saxon numbers (1) . Education. The jargon peculiar to Marxist writing ( hyena, hangman, cannibal, petty bourgeois, these gentry, lackey, flunkey, mad dog, White Guard, etc.) consists largely of words translated from Russian, German, or French; but the normal way of coining a new word is to use Latin or Greek root with the appropriate affix and, where necessary, the size formation. It is often easier to make up words of this kind ( deregionalize, impermissible, extramarital, non-fragmentary and so forth) than to think up the English words that will cover one's meaning. The result, in general, is an increase in slovenliness and vagueness. MEANINGLESS WORDS. In certain kinds of writing, particularly in art criticism and literary criticism, it is political subculture normal to come across long passages which are almost completely lacking in meaning (2) . Words like romantic, plastic, values, human, dead, sentimental, natural, vitality, as used in art criticism, are strictly meaningless, in the sense that they not only do not point to any discoverable object, but are hardly ever expected to do so by the reader.

When one critic writes, The outstanding feature of sociology, Mr. X's work is its living quality, while another writes, The immediately striking thing about Mr. London's The Call Of The Wild Essay. X's work is its peculiar deadness, the reader accepts this as a simple difference opinion. If words like black and white were involved, instead of the education, jargon words dead and living , he would see at once that language was being used in an improper way. Many political words are similarly abused. The word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies something not desirable. Jack The Call Essay. The words democracy, socialism, freedom, patriotic, realistic, justice have each of them several different meanings which cannot be reconciled with one another. In the case of a word like democracy , not only is education there no agreed definition, but the attempt to make one is resisted from Holocaust, all sides. It is sociology education almost universally felt that when we call a country democratic we are praising it: consequently the defenders of political, every kind of regime claim that it is a democracy, and fear that they might have to stop using that word if it were tied down to education, any one meaning. Words of this kind are often used in a consciously dishonest way. That is, the person who uses them has his own private definition, but allows his hearer to think he means something quite different.

Statements like Marshal Petain was a true patriot, The Soviet press is the freest in the world, The Catholic Church is opposed to persecution, are almost always made with intent to deceive. Other words used in variable meanings, in Essay Hitler Holocaust most cases more or less dishonestly, are: class, totalitarian, science, progressive, reactionary, bourgeois, equality. Now that I have made this catalogue of education, swindles and perversions, let me give another example of the kind of writing that they lead to. This time it must of its nature be an subculture, imaginary one. I am going to education, translate a passage of good English into modern English of the worst sort. Here is a well-known verse from Ecclesiastes : I returned and saw under the sun, that the race is not to wallpaper, the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. Here it is in modern English: Objective considerations of contemporary phenomena compel the conclusion that success or failure in competitive activities exhibits no tendency to be commensurate with innate capacity, but that a considerable element of the unpredictable must invariably be taken into account. This is a parody, but not a very gross one. Exhibit (3) above, for sociology education instance, contains several patches of the same kind of English. It will be seen that I have not made a full translation.

The beginning and ending of the Essay on Adolf Hitler and The, sentence follow the sociology, original meaning fairly closely, but in the middle the concrete illustrations race, battle, bread dissolve into the vague phrases success or failure in competitive activities. This had to be so, because no modern writer of the kind I am discussing no one capable of using phrases like objective considerations of contemporary phenomena would ever tabulate his thoughts in that precise and detailed way. The whole tendency of modern prose is Paulo Freire and William Brickman Essays away from concreteness. Now analyze these two sentences a little more closely. The first contains forty-nine words but only sixty syllables, and sociology, all its words are those of everyday life. Essay On Adolf And The. The second contains thirty-eight words of sociology education, ninety syllables: eighteen of those words are from on Adolf and The Holocaust, Latin roots, and one from Greek. The first sentence contains six vivid images, and only one phrase (time and chance) that could be called vague. Education. The second contains not a single fresh, arresting phrase, and in spite of its ninety syllables it gives only Paulo a shortened version of the meaning contained in the first. Sociology. Yet without a doubt it is the second kind of sentence that is gaining ground in modern English.

I do not want to exaggerate. This kind of writing is not yet universal, and outcrops of simplicity will occur here and there in the worst-written page. Still, if you or I were told to write a few lines on the uncertainty of human fortunes, we should probably come much nearer to my imaginary sentence than to the one from Ecclesiastes . As I have tried to show, modern writing at its worst does not consist in picking out words for herod poem the sake of education, their meaning and inventing images in order to Wild Essay, make the sociology education, meaning clearer. It consists in gumming together long strips of queen, words which have already been set in sociology order by someone else, and making the results presentable by sheer humbug. On Adolf Hitler And The. The attraction of this way of education, writing is and William Brickman Essays that it is easy. It is easier even quicker, once you have the habit to sociology education, say In my opinion it is not an unjustifiable assumption that than to say I think . And William. If you use ready-made phrases, you not only education don't have to hunt about for the words; you also don't have to bother with the rhythms of your sentences since these phrases are generally so arranged as to be more or less euphonious.

When you are composing in a hurry when you are dictating to a stenographer, for queen herod instance, or making a public speech it is natural to education, fall into a pretentious, Latinized style. Tags like a consideration which we should do well to bear in environment mind or a conclusion to which all of us would readily assent will save many a sentence from coming down with a bump. By using stale metaphors, similes, and idioms, you save much mental effort, at the cost of sociology, leaving your meaning vague, not only for your reader but for yourself. This is the significance of mixed metaphors. The sole aim of a metaphor is to call up a visual image. When these images clash as in The Fascist octopus has sung its swan song, the jackboot is thrown into the melting pot it can be taken as certain that the writer is Brickman Essays not seeing a mental image of the objects he is sociology naming; in other words he is Brickman Essays not really thinking. Sociology Education. Look again at the examples I gave at Freire, the beginning of sociology education, this essay.

Professor Laski (1) uses five negatives in fifty three words. One of these is superfluous, making nonsense of the whole passage, and in addition there is the slip alien for akin making further nonsense, and Paulo Freire Brickman Essays, several avoidable pieces of clumsiness which increase the general vagueness. Professor Hogben (2) plays ducks and drakes with a battery which is able to write prescriptions, and, while disapproving of the everyday phrase put up with , is unwilling to look egregious up in the dictionary and see what it means; (3), if one takes an uncharitable attitude towards it, is simply meaningless: probably one could work out its intended meaning by reading the whole of the sociology, article in which it occurs. Queen Herod. In (4), the writer knows more or less what he wants to say, but an accumulation of stale phrases chokes him like tea leaves blocking a sink. Education. In (5), words and meaning have almost parted company. People who write in this manner usually have a general emotional meaning they dislike one thing and Jack London's The Call Wild, want to express solidarity with another but they are not interested in the detail of sociology, what they are saying. A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus: What am I trying to say? What words will express it? What image or idiom will make it clearer?

Is this image fresh enough to have an Jack London's Wild Essay, effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: Could I put it more shortly? Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly? But you are not obliged to go to all this trouble. You can shirk it by simply throwing your mind open and letting the ready-made phrases come crowding in. The will construct your sentences for you even think your thoughts for you, to a certain extent and at education, need they will perform the important service of London's Wild Essay, partially concealing your meaning even from yourself. It is at this point that the special connection between politics and the debasement of sociology education, language becomes clear. In our time it is broadly true that political writing is bad writing.

Where it is not true, it will generally be found that the writer is some kind of rebel, expressing his private opinions and Paulo Freire and William Brickman Essays, not a party line. Orthodoxy, of whatever colour, seems to demand a lifeless, imitative style. The political dialects to be found in pamphlets, leading articles, manifestos, White papers and the speeches of sociology education, undersecretaries do, of course, vary from party to environment, party, but they are all alike in sociology that one almost never finds in them a fresh, vivid, homemade turn of speech. Queen Herod. When one watches some tired hack on the platform mechanically repeating the familiar phrases bestial, atrocities, iron heel, bloodstained tyranny, free peoples of the world, stand shoulder to shoulder one often has a curious feeling that one is not watching a live human being but some kind of dummy: a feeling which suddenly becomes stronger at moments when the light catches the speaker's spectacles and turns them into blank discs which seem to have no eyes behind them. And this is not altogether fanciful. A speaker who uses that kind of sociology education, phraseology has gone some distance toward turning himself into a machine. The appropriate noises are coming out of his larynx, but his brain is not involved, as it would be if he were choosing his words for himself.

If the speech he is making is one that he is accustomed to make over and over again, he may be almost unconscious of Paulo Freire Essays, what he is saying, as one is when one utters the responses in church. And this reduced state of consciousness, if not indispensable, is at any rate favourable to political conformity. In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defence of the indefensible. Things like the continuance of British rule in education India, the Russian purges and deportations, the dropping of the atom bombs on market, Japan, can indeed be defended, but only by arguments which are too brutal for most people to face, and which do not square with the professed aims of the sociology education, political parties. Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness. Defenceless villages are bombarded from the air, the inhabitants driven out into the countryside, the environment, cattle machine-gunned, the huts set on fire with incendiary bullets: this is called pacification . Education. Millions of peasants are robbed of their farms and Paulo Freire Brickman Essays, sent trudging along the roads with no more than they can carry: this is called transfer of population or rectification of sociology, frontiers . Subculture. People are imprisoned for years without trial, or shot in the back of the neck or sent to die of education, scurvy in Arctic lumber camps: this is called elimination of unreliable elements . Such phraseology is needed if one wants to name things without calling up mental pictures of them.

Consider for instance some comfortable English professor defending Russian totalitarianism. Wallpaper Papers. He cannot say outright, I believe in killing off your opponents when you can get good results by doing so. Sociology Education. Probably, therefore, he will say something like this: While freely conceding that the Soviet regime exhibits certain features which the humanitarian may be inclined to deplore, we must, I think, agree that a certain curtailment of the right to political opposition is an Paulo Freire Brickman, unavoidable concomitant of transitional periods, and sociology education, that the rigors which the Russian people have been called upon to undergo have been amply justified in the sphere of concrete achievement. The inflated style itself is on Adolf a kind of euphemism. A mass of Latin words falls upon sociology education the facts like soft snow, blurring the outline and covering up all the details.

The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. Essay On Adolf And The Holocaust. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and education, exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink. In our age there is no such thing as keeping out of politics. All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and schizophrenia. When the general atmosphere is bad, language must suffer. I should expect to find this is a guess which I have not sufficient knowledge to verify that the German, Russian and Italian languages have all deteriorated in the last ten or fifteen years, as a result of subculture, dictatorship. But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.

A bad usage can spread by tradition and imitation even among people who should and do know better. The debased language that I have been discussing is in some ways very convenient. Phrases like a not unjustifiable assumption, leaves much to be desired, would serve no good purpose, a consideration which we should do well to bear in mind, are a continuous temptation, a packet of aspirins always at one's elbow. Look back through this essay, and for sociology education certain you will find that I have again and again committed the very faults I am protesting against. Definition. By this morning's post I have received a pamphlet dealing with conditions in Germany. Sociology Education. The author tells me that he felt impelled to write it. I open it at random, and here is almost the first sentence I see: [The Allies] have an opportunity not only on Adolf Hitler Holocaust of achieving a radical transformation of Germany's social and political structure in such a way as to sociology, avoid a nationalistic reaction in Germany itself, but at the same time of laying the foundations of a co-operative and unified Europe. You see, he feels impelled to write feels, presumably, that he has something new to say and yet his words, like cavalry horses answering the bugle, group themselves automatically into the familiar dreary pattern. This invasion of one's mind by and The Holocaust ready-made phrases ( lay the sociology education, foundations, achieve a radical transformation ) can only be prevented if one is constantly on Essay and The Holocaust, guard against them, and sociology education, every such phrase anaesthetizes a portion of one's brain.

I said earlier that the decadence of our language is probably curable. Those who deny this would argue, if they produced an argument at market environment, all, that language merely reflects existing social conditions, and that we cannot influence its development by any direct tinkering with words and constructions. So far as the general tone or spirit of a language goes, this may be true, but it is not true in detail. Silly words and expressions have often disappeared, not through any evolutionary process but owing to the conscious action of a minority. Two recent examples were explore every avenue and leave no stone unturned , which were killed by the jeers of a few journalists. There is a long list of flyblown metaphors which could similarly be got rid of sociology education, if enough people would interest themselves in the job; and it should also be possible to laugh the not un- formation out of existence (3) , to reduce the market, amount of Latin and sociology education, Greek in the average sentence, to drive out foreign phrases and strayed scientific words, and, in general, to make pretentiousness unfashionable. But all these are minor points. The defence of the political subculture, English language implies more than this, and perhaps it is education best to start by saying what it does not imply. To begin with it has nothing to queen herod poem, do with archaism, with the salvaging of sociology education, obsolete words and turns of speech, or with the setting up of a standard English which must never be departed from. Wallpaper Papers. On the sociology education, contrary, it is especially concerned with the scrapping of every word or idiom which has outworn its usefulness.

It has nothing to do with correct grammar and syntax, which are of no importance so long as one makes one's meaning clear, or with the avoidance of Americanisms, or with having what is called a good prose style. On the other hand, it is political definition not concerned with fake simplicity and sociology, the attempt to make written English colloquial. Nor does it even imply in every case preferring the Saxon word to the Latin one, though it does imply using the market environment, fewest and shortest words that will cover one's meaning. What is above all needed is to let the meaning choose the word, and not the other way around. In prose, the worst thing one can do with words is surrender to them.

When you think of a concrete object, you think wordlessly, and sociology, then, if you want to describe the thing you have been visualising you probably hunt about until you find the exact words that seem to fit it. When you think of Jack Wild Essay, something abstract you are more inclined to use words from the start, and unless you make a conscious effort to prevent it, the education, existing dialect will come rushing in and do the job for you, at queen poem, the expense of blurring or even changing your meaning. Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible and get one's meaning as clear as one can through pictures and education, sensations. Afterward one can choose not simply accept the queen, phrases that will best cover the meaning, and then switch round and sociology, decide what impressions one's words are likely to Freire Brickman Essays, make on another person. This last effort of the mind cuts out all stale or mixed images, all prefabricated phrases, needless repetitions, and humbug and vagueness generally. Sociology Education. But one can often be in market environment doubt about the sociology education, effect of a word or a phrase, and one needs rules that one can rely on when instinct fails. I think the papers, following rules will cover most cases: Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. Never use a long word where a short one will do. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. Never use the passive where you can use the active.

Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous. These rules sound elementary, and so they are, but they demand a deep change of attitude in anyone who has grown used to writing in the style now fashionable. One could keep all of them and still write bad English, but one could not write the kind of stuff that I quoted in those five specimens at the beginning of this article. I have not here been considering the literary use of language, but merely language as an instrument for expressing and not for sociology concealing or preventing thought. Stuart Chase and others have come near to claiming that all abstract words are meaningless, and have used this as a pretext for advocating a kind of political quietism.

Since you don't know what Fascism is, how can you struggle against Fascism? One need not swallow such absurdities as this, but one ought to recognise that the present political chaos is queen herod connected with the education, decay of language, and that one can probably bring about some improvement by starting at the verbal end. If you simplify your English, you are freed from the worst follies of orthodoxy. You cannot speak any of the necessary dialects, and when you make a stupid remark its stupidity will be obvious, even to yourself. Political language and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists is Essay on Adolf and The designed to education, make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to and William Brickman Essays, pure wind. One cannot change this all in a moment, but one can at least change one's own habits, and from time to time one can even, if one jeers loudly enough, send some worn-out and useless phrase some jackboot, Achilles heel, hotbed, melting pot, acid test, veritable inferno, or other lump of verbal refuse into the dustbin where it belongs.

carls essay Dr. C. George Boeree. Carl Rogers was born January 8, 1902 in sociology education Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of environment, Chicago, the fourth of six children. Sociology. His father was a successful civil engineer and his mother was a housewife and devout Christian. His education started in the second grade, because he could already read before kindergarten. When Carl was 12, his family moved to a farm about 30 miles west of Chicago, and political, it was here that he was to spend his adolescence. With a strict upbringing and many chores, Carl was to become rather isolated, independent, and self-disciplined. He went on to the University of Wisconsin as an agriculture major. Later, he switched to religion to study for sociology the ministry. During this time, he was selected as one of ten students to go to Jack London's The Call Beijing for the World Student Christian Federation Conference for sociology six months.

He tells us that his new experiences so broadened his thinking that he began to doubt some of his basic religious views. After graduation, he married Helen Elliot (against his parents wishes), moved to New York City, and began attending the Union Theological Seminary, a famous liberal religious institution. While there, he took a student organized seminar called Why am I entering the ministry? I might as well tell you that, unless you want to change your career, never take a class with such a title! He tells us that most of the participants thought their way right out of religious work. Religions loss was, of Essay Hitler and The, course, psychologys gain: Rogers switched to the clinical psychology program of Columbia University, and education, received his Ph.D. in market environment 1931. He had already begun his clinical work at the Rochester Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. At this clinic, he learned about Otto Ranks theory and sociology, therapy techniques, which started him on the road to wallpaper developing his own approach. He was offered a full professorship at sociology Ohio State in 1940.

In 1942, he wrote his first book, Counseling and Psychotherapy. Wallpaper Papers. Then, in sociology education 1945, he was invited to set up a counseling center at the University of Chicago. It was while working there that in 1951 he published his major work, Client-Centered Therapy, wherein he outlines his basic theory. In 1957, he returned to teach at on Adolf Holocaust his alma mater, the sociology education, University of Freire and William Brickman Essays, Wisconsisn. Unfortunately, it was a time of conflict within their psychology department, and Rogers became very disillusioned with higher education. In 1964, he was happy to accept a research position in La Jolla, California. He provided therapy, gave speeches, and education, wrote, until his death in 1987. Rogers theory is a clinical one, based on years of experience dealing with his clients. He has this in common with Freud, for example. Also in common with Freud is that his is poem, a particularly rich and sociology, mature theory -- well thought-out and logically tight, with broad application.

Not in common with Freud, however, is the fact that Rogers sees people as basically good or healthy -- or at very least, not bad or ill. Market Environment. In other words, he sees mental health as the normal progression of life, and he sees mental illness, criminality, and other human problems, as distortions of that natural tendency. Also not in sociology common with Freud is the fact that Rogers theory is a relatively simple one. Also not in political common with Freud is that Rogers theory is particularly simple -- elegant even! The entire theory is built on a single force of life he calls the actualizing tendency . It can be defined as the sociology education, built-in motivation present in every life-form to develop its potentials to the fullest extent possible. Were not just talking about survival: Rogers believes that all creatures strive to make the wallpaper papers, very best of their existence. If they fail to do so, it is not for a lack of sociology education, desire.

Rogers captures with this single great need or motive all the other motives that other theorists talk about. He asks us, why do we want air and water and food? Why do we seek safety, love, and a sense of competence? Why, indeed, do we seek to discover new medicines, invent new power sources, or create new works of Paulo Freire and William Brickman Essays, art? Because, he answers, it is in our nature as living things to do the very best we can! Keep in mind that, unlike Maslows use of the term, Rogers applies it to sociology education all living creatures.

Some of his earliest examples, in on Adolf Hitler and The fact, include seaweed and sociology, mushrooms! Think about it: Doesnt it sometimes amaze you the political subculture definition, way weeds will grow through the sidewalk, or saplings crack boulders, or animals survive desert conditions or the frozen north? He also applied the sociology, idea to ecosystems, saying that an ecosystem such as a forest, with all its complexity, has a much greater actualization potential than a simple ecosystem such as a corn field. If one bug were to become extinct in a forest, there are likely to be other creatures that will adapt to fill the gap; On the other hand, one bout of corn blight or some such disaster, and you have a dust bowl. Subculture. The same for us as individuals: If we live as we should, we will become increasingly complex, like the sociology, forest, and thereby remain flexible in the face of lifes little -- and big -- disasters. People, however, in the course of actualizing their potentials, created society and culture.

In and of itself, thats not a problem: We are a social creature, it is our nature. But when we created culture, it developed a life of its own. Jack Of The Wild Essay. Rather than remaining close to other aspects of sociology education, our natures, culture can become a force in its own right. And even if, in Essay Holocaust the long run, a culture that interferes with our actualization dies out, we, in education all likelihood, will die with it. Dont misunderstand: Culture and society are not intrinsically evil!

Its more along the lines of the subculture, birds of sociology education, paradise found in Papua-New Guinea. The colorful and dramatic plumage of the males apparently distract predators from females and the young. Natural selection has led these birds towards more and herod poem, more elaborate tail feathers, until in sociology some species the male can no longer get off the ground. At that point, being colorful doesnt do the market, male -- or the species -- much good! In the same way, our elaborate societies, complex cultures, incredible technologies, for all that they have helped us to survive and prosper, may at the same time serve to harm us, and possibly even destroy us. Rogers tells us that organisms know what is good for them. Evolution has provided us with the senses, the sociology, tastes, the discriminations we need: When we hunger, we find food -- not just any food, but food that tastes good. Food that tastes bad is on Adolf Hitler, likely to be spoiled, rotten, unhealthy. That what good and sociology, bad tastes are -- our evolutionary lessons made clear! This is called organismic valuing . Among the many things that we instinctively value is Hitler and The, positive regard , Rogers umbrella term for things like love, affection, attention, nurturance, and sociology, so on. It is clear that babies need love and attention.

In fact, it may well be that they die without it. They certainly fail to thrive -- i.e. become all they can be. Another thing -- perhaps peculiarly human -- that we value is positive self-regard , that is, self-esteem, self-worth, a positive self-image. Queen Poem. We achieve this positive self-regard by experiencing the positive regard others show us over sociology education, our years of growing up. Without this self-regard, we feel small and helpless, and again we fail to market become all that we can be!

Like Maslow, Rogers believes that, if left to their own devices, animals will tend to eat and drink things that are good for them, and sociology, consume them in balanced proportions. Babies, too, seem to want and Essay on Adolf and The Holocaust, like what they need. Education. Somewhere along the line, however, we have created an environment for ourselves that is Jack London's The Call of the Wild, significantly different from the one in sociology which we evolved. In this new environment are such things as refined sugar, flour, butter, chocolate, and so on, that our ancestors in Africa never knew. Jack The Call Of The Wild Essay. These things have flavors that appeal to education our organismic valuing -- yet do not serve our actualization well. Over millions of years, we may evolve to find brocolli more satisfying than cheesecake -- but by then, itll be way too late for you and me. Our society also leads us astray with conditions of worth . As we grow up, our parents, teachers, peers, the media, and others, only give us what we need when we show we are worthy, rather than just because we need it. We get a drink when we finish our class, we get something sweet when we finish our vegetables, and herod, most importantly, we get love and affection if and only if we behave! Getting positive regard on on condition Rogers calls conditional positive regard . Because we do indeed need positive regard, these conditions are very powerful, and we bend ourselves into a shape determined, not by our organismic valuing or our actualizing tendency, but by a society that may or may not truly have our best interests at sociology heart. A good little boy or girl may not be a healthy or happy boy or girl! Over time, this conditioning leads us to have conditional positive self-regard as well.

We begin to wallpaper like ourselves only if we meet up with the standards others have applied to us, rather than if we are truly actualizing our potentials. And since these standards were created without keeping each individual in mind, more often than not we find ourselves unable to meet them, and therefore unable to sociology education maintain any sense of self-esteem. The aspect of your being that is founded in the actualizing tendency, follows organismic valuing, needs and queen poem, receives positive regard and self-regard, Rogers calls the real self . It is the you that, if all goes well, you will become. On the other hand, to sociology education the extent that our society is out of synch with the political subculture, actualizing tendency, and sociology education, we are forced to papers live with conditions of worth that are out of step with organismic valuing, and sociology, receive only conditional positive regard and self-regard, we develop instead an ideal self . By ideal, Rogers is on Adolf Hitler, suggesting something not real, something that is sociology, always out of our reach, the standard we cant meet. This gap between the real self and the ideal self, the I am and the I should is called incongruity . The greater the Paulo and William, gap, the more incongruity. The more incongruity, the more suffering.

In fact, incongruity is essentially what Rogers means by neurosis : Being out of synch with your own self. If this all sounds familiar to sociology education you, it is market environment, precisely the same point made by Karen Horney! When you are in a situation where there is an sociology education, incongruity between your image of yourself and your immediate experience of yourself (i.e. between the ideal and the real self), you are in a threatening situation . For example, if you have been taught to feel unworthy if you do not get A's on all your tests, and yet you aren't really all that great a student, then situations such as tests are going to bring that incongruity to light -- tests will be very threatening. When you are expecting a threatening situation, you will feel anxiety . Anxiety is queen, a signal indicating that there is education, trouble ahead, that you should avoid the situation! One way to avoid the situation, of course, is to pick yourself up and market environment, run for the hills. Since that is sociology education, not usually an option in life, instead of running physically, we run psychologically, by Jack The Call Essay using defenses . Rogers' idea of defenses is very similar to sociology Freud's, except that Rogers considers everything from a perceptual point-of-view, so that even memories and Paulo Freire Essays, impulses are thought of as perceptions. Education. Fortunately for us, he has only two defenses: denial and perceptual distortion.

Denial means very much what it does in Freud's system: You block out the threatening situation altogether. An example might be the person who never picks up his test or asks about test results, so he doesn't have to face poor grades (at least for now!). Denial for Rogers does also include what Freud called repression: If keeping a memory or an impulse out of market environment, your awareness -- refuse to perceive it -- you may be able to avoid (again, for education now!) a threatening situation. Perceptual distortion is London's, a matter of reinterpreting the education, situation so that it appears less threatening. It is very similar to Paulo Freire Brickman Essays Freud's rationalization. A student that is threatened by tests and grades may, for example, blame the professor for poor teaching, trick questions, bad attitude, or whatever. The fact that sometimes professors are poor teachers, write trick questions, and have bad attitudes only makes the distortion work better: If it could be true, then maybe it really was true! It can also be much more obviously perceptual, such as when the person misreads his grade as better than it is.

Unfortunately for the poor neurotic (and, in fact, most of us), every time he or she uses a defense, they put a greater distance between the real and the ideal. They become ever more incongruous, and find themselves in more and more threatening situations, develop greater and education, greater levels of anxiety, and use more and more defenses. It becomes a vicious cycle that the person eventually is wallpaper papers, unable to get out of, at least on their own. Rogers also has a partial explanation for psychosis : Psychosis occurs when a person's defense are overwhelmed, and their sense of self becomes shattered into little disconnected pieces. His behavior likewise has little consistency to it. We see him as having psychotic breaks -- episodes of bizarre behavior. His words may make little sense.

His emotions may be inappropriate. He may lose the ability to differentiate self and non-self, and become disoriented and passive. The fully-functioning person. Rogers, like Maslow, is just as interested in describing the healthy person. His term is sociology, fully-functioning, and involves the London's The Call Essay, following qualities: 1. Openness to experience . This is the opposite education of defensiveness.

It is the accurate perception of queen, one's experiences in the world, including one's feelings. It also means being able to sociology education accept reality, again including one's feelings. Feelings are such an important part of openness because they convey organismic valuing. If you cannot be open to your feelings, you cannot be open to acualization. The hard part, of course, is distinguishing real feelings from the anxieties brought on by conditions of worth. 2. Existential living . Essay. This is living in education the here-and-now. Essay. Rogers, as a part of getting in touch with reality, insists that we not live in the past or the future -- the one is gone, and the other isn't anything at all, yet!

The present is the education, only reality we have. Mind you, that doesn't mean we shouldn't remember and wallpaper papers, learn from our past. Neither does it mean we shouldn't plan or even day-dream about the future. Just recognize these things for sociology education what they are: memories and and William Brickman, dreams, which we are experiencing here in the present. 3. Education. Organismic trusting . We should allow ourselves to be guided by the organismic valuing process. We should trust ourselves, do what feels right, what comes natural. This, as I'm sure you realize, has become a major sticking point in Rogers' theory.

People say, sure, do what comes natural -- if you are a sadist, hurt people; if you are a masochist, hurt yourself; if the drugs or alcohol make you happy, go for it; if you are depressed, kill yourself. This certainly doesn't sound like great advice. In fact, many of the excesses of the sixties and seventies were blamed on this attitude. But keep in mind that Rogers meant trust your real self, and you can only know what your real self has to say if you are open to environment experience and living existentially! In other words, organismic trusting assumes you are in contact with the acutalizing tendency.

4. Experiential freedom . Rogers felt that it was irrelevant whether or not people really had free will. We feel very much as if we do. This is not to education say, of course, that we are free to queen herod poem do anything at all: We are surrounded by a deterministic universe, so that, flap my arms as much as I like, I will not fly like Superman. It means that we feel free when choices are available to sociology us. Rogers says that the fully-functioning person acknowledges that feeling of freedom, and takes responsibility for his choices. 5. Creativity . If you feel free and Paulo Brickman Essays, responsible, you will act accordingly, and participate in the world. Sociology Education. A fully-functioning person, in touch with acualization, will feel obliged by their nature to contribute to the actualization of others, even life itself. On Adolf Holocaust. This can be through creativity in the arts or sciences, through social concern and parental love, or simply by doing one's best at one's job.

Creativity as Rogers uses it is very close to Erikson's generativity. Carl Rogers is best known for his contributions to therapy. His therapy has gone through a couple of name changes along the education, way: He originally called it non-directive , because he felt that the therapist should not lead the papers, client, but rather be there for the client while the sociology, client directs the progress of the therapy. As he became more experienced, he realized that, as non-directive as he was, he still influenced his client by his very non-directiveness! In other words, clients look to therapists for guidance, and will find it even when the therapist is trying not to guide. So he changed the name to client-centered . He still felt that the subculture definition, client was the education, one who should say what is wrong, find ways of improving, and Freire Brickman Essays, determine the sociology, conclusion of therapy -- his therapy was still very client-centered even while he acknowledged the impact of the therapist. Definition. Unfortunately, other therapists felt that this name for education his therapy was a bit of a slap in the face for Paulo Freire Essays them: Aren't most therapies client-centered? Nowadays, though the terms non-directive and client-centered are still used, most people just call it Rogerian therapy . One of the phrases that Rogers used to describe his therapy is supportive, not reconstructive, and he uses the analogy of education, learning to ride a bicycle to explain: When you help a child to learn to ride a bike, you can't just tell them how. They have to subculture definition try it for themselves. And you can't hold them up the whole time either. There comes a point when you have to let them go.

If they fall, they fall, but if you hang on, they never learn. It's the same in therapy. Sociology. If independence (autonomy, freedom with responsibility) is what you are helping a client to achieve, then they will not achieve it if they remain dependent on Freire and William Essays, you, the therapist. They need to try their insights on their own, in real life beyond the sociology education, therapist's office! An authoritarian approach to therapy may seem to work marvelously at first, but ultimately it only creates a dependent person. There is only one technique that Rogerians are known for: reflection . Reflection is the mirroring of emotional communication: If the political definition, client says I feel like shit! the therapist may reflect this back to the client by saying something like So, life's getting you down, hey? By doing this, the therapist is communicating to the client that he is indeed listening and cares enough to understand. The therapist is also letting the client know what it is the client is communicating.

Often, people in distress say things that they don't mean because it feels good to say them. For example, a woman once came to me and said I hate men! I reflected by saying You hate all men? Well, she said, maybe not all -- she didn't hate her father or her brother or, for that matter, me. Even with those men she hated, she discovered that the great majority of them she didn't feel as strongly as the word hate implies. In fact, ultimately, she realized that she didn't trust many men, and that she was afraid of being hurt by them the sociology, way she had been by one particular man. Reflection must be used carefully, however. Many beginning therapists use it without thinking (or feeling), and Hitler Holocaust, just repeat every other phrase that comes out of the sociology, client's mouth.

They sound like parrots with psychology degrees! Then they think that the client doesn't notice, when in Essay on Adolf Hitler Holocaust fact it has become a stereotype of Rogerian therapy the same way as sex and mom have become stereotypes of Freudian therapy. Reflection must come from the heart -- it must be genuine, congruent. Which brings us to Rogers' famous requirements of the therapist. Rogers felt that a therapist, in sociology order to be effective, must have three very special qualities: 1. Congruence -- genuineness, honesty with the environment, client. 2. Empathy -- the sociology education, ability to feel what the client feels. 3. Respect -- acceptance, unconditional positive regard towards the client. He says these qualities are necessary and sufficient : If the therapist shows these three qualities, the client will improve, even if no other special techniques are used. Political Subculture. If the therapist does not show these three qualities, the client's improvement will be minimal, no matter how many techniques are used. Now this is a lot to ask of a therapist!

They're just human, and education, often enough a bit more human (let's say unusual) than most. Rogers does give in a little, and he adds that the therapist must show these things in wallpaper papers the therapy relationship. In other words, when the therapist leaves the office, he can be as human as anybody. I happen to sociology education agree with Rogers, even though these qualities are quite demanding. Some of the market, research does suggest that techniques don't matter nearly as much as the education, therapist's personality, and that, to some extent at least, therapists are born not made. Rogers was a great writer, a real pleasure to Freire and William read. The most complete statement of his theory is in Client-centered Therapy (1951). Two collections of essays are very interesting: On Becoming a Person (1961) and A Way of Being (1980).

Finally, there's a nice collection of his work in sociology The Carl Rogers Reader , edited by Kirschenbaum and Henderson (1989).
